I recommend a trip to Agadez, in the country of Niger. This is a small town in the center of Niger. I visited there in 1999. I think about this place every time I hear U2 "Where the Streets Have no Name." The town is peaceful. Visit the Camel market. The craftsmen make beautiful jewelry out of silver. It would be a plus if you speak French. This is a difficult place to get to. If you are willing to squeeze into a van/truck with the locals it can be a very inexpensive, and adventurous trip. Also very uncomfortable, but you can handle it.

Make sure that you bring along:
Plenty of Water.
Cold weather clothes (Temp. drops an average of fifty degrees at night in most deserts)
Salt Pills
Sunscreen
Sun Glasses/ rated for extreme Sun conditions
Snake, insect, and scorpion bite kits
A tent w/ insect netting may prove helpful
Communications
Flashlight
Knowledge
Deserts can be very beautiful; however, they are very dangerous.
Good luck!!
