I know what you mean. I used to feel that way. But remember, nearly everyone else is thinking about themselves, not about you. And if you're not a good dancer, so what? Who cares? It's just for fun. You don't have to be good. And read the other answers on this page, because a lot of them are really good. (See how many people wish you well?)

No alcohol... and where trainers and loose combats. or short skirt.
If you drink you have no control so no confidence.
Martial arts help like capoeria
Go to a rock club (wild music gives you confidence and guts)where they most to songs like in a concert at the front where all pushing around each other and bouncing around (ye it appears scarey but arms up and you should be fine and pick up the 'positive aggression and fire in your heart ' positive means you dont try and hurt anyone but get fired up.
So you come out all hot, blood coursing through your arms , feeling the power THEN start to dance)
Get into a more aggressive music nice people culture like rock or rave (hip hop is good but many people not so nice)
Rock/metal and rave are less judging.
But the main way is take up a martial art like capoeria as the exwercises are similar
But most of all practice dancing in the dark at lot...
So its just you and ther music and how the music empowers you and its essentce (bit like the force in star wars) what the singer feels and see the music like an energy field around you...
You want music that can be described and spiked stronly or looped... hip hop is pretty looped for example, spanish dancing, Michael jackson and Britney Spears stuff is spiky... And yes you can have better taste.
Something like Boomfunk Mcs free styler, nu metal stuff like Linkon Park, is good.
You want linier music where there is a 'stroy line almost not simiply a constant beat.

Hi, I don't think drink is the answer, who wants to dance with a drunk haha..
Have you tried going to a local dance group, I go to Ceroc (it's like Salsa) they teach you move for move, everyone is really friendly, it will help your confidence no end.. It did with me, I am quite shy & when you know a few moves -it won't take long- it really helps you to get through your fears!!
you can look online under Ceroc Central, it will tell you where your local venues are..
Good Luck :-)

Here's what I do, I just close my eyes and move to the music. Then everyone thinks you're just really into the song. Then I look around, and if I see someone doing something I like, I turn around and incorporate it into my dance. Practice at home if you're insecure, learn some cool moves, and when you have it, you'll be confident about dancing. OR you can go take dance lessons, but my way is cheaper. But, just have fun! Ladies love to dance, and to be asked to dance. (Although, if you dance like a dork you'll probably only get one dance. So learn and practice!)

I guess you enjoy music so try moving to music at home on your own. Then when you feel confident in your movements try them on the dance floor at a social occasion. Always dance to music you enjoy, at least to start with. Then you can progress to music you feel less comfortable with with more confidence. Remember dancing is personal and social. Dance for yourself first and really enjoy your movement. When other people see that you are enjoying yourself they will feel confident and want to dance with you. Hope that is of some use, cheers PP

Find the worst dancer in the room and dnace next to them. Everyone will think you are a great dancer, the compliments will fly in and so boost the confidence. If not you will match their bad dancing and create a great way into a conversation with soemone.

alcohol is not the answer.
dance around your house in front of mirrors. also go to your friends house for parties. usually when i started dancing i would only dance around people i knew because i knew they were not going to make fun of me.
but you know what clubs are fun too. people nowadays dane by themseveles all the time, in groups or in a corner. and nowadays everyone dances to their own space.
so dont worry go out have fun, and if you make a fool of yourself, who cares, considering everyone else is doing the same old thing.
