so......do you think that white people are being too naive and black people are taking white people's advantage, by bringing up how they were oppressed and the notion of slavery! i am not being racist but it feels like black people are getting more advantages if you notice in media, or employment, etc!

There are always individuals who take advantage, but those come in every color. Con men and people who "work the system" both financially & politically exist in every nation on earth- from Russia to China to the USA. And there are always politicians who are willing to pander to such nonsense to further their own careers.

Sure, blacks and other minorities are more visible in corporate America and in the media, but that's to be expected. First of all, there are simply more of them as a percentage of the population than 50 years ago. Second, the barriers to them attending certain schools or holding certain jobs have been coming down. But don't kid yourselves, that's not an overnight thing where you say "OK, everyone is allowed now" and it's all fine. Remember there was a time when blacks weren't allowed to play Major League Baseball, and the NBA was predominantly white. So the media image of a primarily white America was a false one to begin with- but since those same people controlled who made it into their industry, that's what we saw in TV & movies.

NASA scientists arrive at those positions after a lifetime of preparation from their earliest days in school- when society didn't allow particular groups of people to even consider holding such positions, the kids weren't being prepared or trained for it. Tiger Woods' parents would never have believed in a young black kid wanting to play pro golf if Arthur Ashe hadn't shocked everyone in the 70's by beating Connors at Wimbledon and changing the face of pro tennis. That example inspired a whole new generation of young black atheletes to compete in arenas they never previously considered.

Yes, recovery from the disparity of economic opportunity takes generations. Home ownership among blacks in the 60's and 70's was at a much lower rate than whites- this means that when those people die, their children don't inherit that real estate or wealth accumulated from it- which in turn means they don't have the same options in terms of sending their kids to colleges or vocational schools, which affects THEIR earning power and how things look down the road for their children, and so on.

Much progress has been made, but it's not an advantage being black- not by a long shot. Even with the affirmative action programs of previous decades which are now history, the likelihood of getting a lease, a loan, or even getting invited back for a 2nd interview is still weighted *against* minorities.

Fortunately, today's kids care less about race than any generation which preceded them. Now if only the same were true of the hiring managers those kids will face as they enter the workforce. Let people be judged by the merits of their actions and their qualifications, not their tan.

Now I agree that the constant dredging up of slavery isn't helping anyone. No white people alive today made those decisions or participated in that system, so they shouldn't be punished for the sins of people from a different era. And it's not as if slavery didn't exist all over the world back then, and even earlier. True, it wasn't industrialized and people sometimes could obtain their freedom, but hell, the Roman Empire had slaves and I don't hear anyone talking about sueing Caesar. Egypt had slaves... That's how the pyramids got built. I think any discussion of slavery at this point, should be focused on the human trafficking that's going on today.

Not right. I'm white liberal. I do not care if you are black or white. All that I care about is your freedoms and mine. I believe people should have the right to have an abortion. It's a freedom. I believe gays should be able to celebrate their unions (not "marriage"), ... I would use the black votes because 90% of blacks vote democrat at each election. I really believe democrats do not take advantage of anyone. Do not focus on some democrat ***holes. Like everything, they are assholes in all parties

No. I think that some people take advantage of other people.

I do think I know what I would like to hope what you are saying. That sometimes it feels like we are still being punished for what our ancestors did (slavery). I can say that although there are people out there that would use that arguement, that most "black" people know that most "white" people do not agree with that and would not have part of it.

It is the same concept that our ancestors took this land from the Native Americans. I love to see that answers to questions that say that "we" as Americans do not have the right to our way of life because we took the land from others. It was wrong but it was our ancestors. We didn't do it, so why bring it up now? Think of all the other countries that took the land from others. Do they have to feel the same way, just because it happened further in the past?

me being a black young woman i feel that most blacks are racists for the wrong reasons because black people have the tendancy to bring up the past no matter what it relates to. but at teh same time a white person would rather have another white person on their side than a black person anyway. slavery is over but there are still some people black and white who still believe that they have an advantage over the opposing race.

Blacks have affirmative action and the media demonizes anything a white person says. You can imagine how many white people got in trouble for saying *********.

IMO, I do think they play the race card way too often. My husband deals with it at work all the time, and wants to find a new job because of it.
They are constantly discussing how the white man tries to bring them down, ect. BLAH BLAH.
But yet, they get over time before my husband or the other employees there do.
I dont know, I dont trust anyone regardless of color until I have a reason to trust them.
We live in a bad area, and my husbands even been shot at by a car full of thugs, imagine how he feels now after that experience......

It always irritates me to hear people bring up slavery as a defense. Did you actually work as a slave? No. The race card is so overplayed. I get it, your history was hard, and it was wrong what happened to them back in the day, but dont use it to justufy everything that you feel is wrong today. Grrr... I am half mexican and half caucasian so I dont know who to be angry at :)

Then explain to me why, regardless of social and fiscal status, it is still harder for blacks to get a loan. In a recent survey, low, middle and high income blacks had a much harder time finding one that their caucasian counterparts. Although there are many blacks who have done much to "pull themselves up," the society is still not equal.
