If your boss is never there to manage expectations it is easy to want to check out and look at other ways to keep busy. Good for you for asking what you can do to be productive despite your boss'es absence.

There were some good suggestions made here. Remembering that you are your brand (you are responsible for productivity) regardless of your bosses actions), first priority where are there gaps, inefficiencies or processes that might be improved at your employer? Take on little projects to keep your skills sharp and values intact. See what you can do to simplify the tasks you really hate doing so you can write your own ticket for what you DO like doing.

If you are known for good work when no one is looking, then you will be known for opportunity when someone IS looking-- it is a universal truth, whether recognized in this job or paid forward towards your more perfect job!

I have the same problem. I spend my time online or writing a book like the first guy. If you can't pester your boss for work, ask if anyone else needs any help. Once that runs out there is usually filing stuff. No one wants to do that. Once you've exhausted all your options, start over again. It's like a horrible game. Careful with the filing though, after the fourth time of organizing the same cabinet, you start to go a little crazy. Then it's time to just spend the day dinking around. If they won't give you anything to do, that isn't your fault now, is it?
