The new "Survivor" season coming up is starting out with 4 tribes - Asians, Caucasians, African-Americans, and Hispanics. Is this racism, or just another plot to get ratings?

Jeff Probst popped in on The Early Show Wednesday morning, confirming the reports that the 20 castaways for Survivor: Cook Islands will be grouped by race, with competitors divided into four tribes consisting of whites, blacks, Asians and Hispanics.

I'm looking forward to it -- I think it will be a good show and I don't have any problem with having people ban together with people they have similar cultural background with.

I like the idea.
I think it is a little controversial as the public willhave to have a bit of angst about it and comment one way or another ... but I see nothing about people of like background and culture, banning together and trying to outwit, outlast, outplay....
It should be taken in the spirit it was intended.... it's ok to be different and to acknowledge and celebrate our cultural differences.

I think it will bring out the best and worst in 'competitors' regardless of race or cultural background.

Expect the unexpected.

I just read a couple of articles on this. I don't believe it is racism at all. They always break the contestants into tribes. Last time it was older men, older women, younger men and younger women. That could have been taken as ageism or sexism but we all realised that it is just a tv show designed for entertainment and to get the highest ratings.

I say watch and enjoy!!

Survivor has always been compelling viewing for me and this is definitely another attempt at keeping it interesting. In the past they have broken the tribes into male, female, young and old - at least at the start of the season before they later merge. so, splitting the tribes into races in my view is no different. it would also be interesting to see what happens from a sociological view point. Therefore, no, I don't consider it racist.

I for one do not get all the controversy over the show...Survivor is always trying to "out-do" all the other reality shows by keeping one step ahead....BUT, unless they have screened the applicants thoroughly, I DO SEE some racial tension possibly happening as the show goes on, and don't we have enough of that already ?

I didnt know it was coming back on. I dont totally agree with the idea of breaking them up into races, but it could be interesting viewing.

Its kinda trash and most likely a scheme to boost ratings. I have never watched Suvivor before but I will probobly watch this season. It depends how they spin it during editing if it will be good or not, but knowing TV it will be tastless.

That sounds pretty racial. I think it is mean. They wouldn't get any ratings if they had race divided tribes. They wont do that

I heard that too. What about sex? Same amount of females on each team? I don't know what difference it would make since they end up merging later.

I don't like it and may not even watch the show if this is for real.It isn't like we don't have enough problems with racism as it is.For a great show like Survivor to do a show like this insults my intelligence.I hope this isn't true.
