To Filipinos: what are the misconceptions about the Philippines that you've seen posted on Y!A?

I'm Filipino and it annoys me when I read something clearly false posted by someone who has limited experience or knowledge about the Philippines. It annoys me even more when the asker doesn't have contact info where I can at least msg them and set them straight.

Examples:
Some girl in Texas thinks the Americans liberated the Philippines from Spain then gave it back to Spain after WWII. (Arghhhhhhhh...)
Some girl lumped Pinoys with all other Asians and generalized that Filipino men are domineering towards all women. (How's we end up with 2 female presidents then?)

I don't get annoyed when some yahoo says something completely stupid like all Pinoys are whores. Everyone can tell they're just being dumb. I'm more annoyed by people who claim to know the Philippines but end up spreading stupid misconceptions that get passed on.

So I'm looking for other examples on Y!A of someone getting the story wrong about Pinoys. I'll keep extending this question so I we can compile a list.

Oh and another thing. Not all Filipinos are nice...get that out of your head. We're just like any other people...push us around enough and you see our ugly side.

If i read or hear anything false about Philippines and Filipinos, i just laugh them off.

last year, I had a caller who said he married a Filipina but he preferred living in the US because there's no DSL or High speed internet in the Philippines.

of course i corrected him. I realized there's no need to argue with somebody who's clearly ignorant.. somebody who who speaks so much out of his little brain.

The most annoying misconception I keep on coming across here on Yahoo! Answers is this -- Filipinas are money-grabbing sluts. I saw a couple of posts made by men from wherever, asking if there's any Filipina here on Y!A who'd want to marry them now that they're retired and rich. Stuff like that. What annoys me so much is the fact that Filipinas are singled out. It gives the general public a wrong impression about the women in the Philippines.

Don't get me wrong; admittedly, there are Filipinas who marry for money, but then again, in every race, there will always be women who do that. Just like in any race, there will always be pickpockets, liars, beggars, corrupt politicians, so on and so forth.

Oh, and another thing. It gets to me when a lot of people misspell "Filipino/Filipina." But then again, I can't really blame them for that. It's not like I knowledgeable in everything either. :)

sometimes you can't blame other people because to start with, there are internet sites that broadcast filipinas (esp. those who live outside the city, some barely went to college, never been outside their village, etc) looking for american husbands. so whoever see those site may have this thought that it can really be happening to every woman in the philippines. they are so blinded with going abroad and stuff. also whenever you go abroad, the ones that arent disciplined are the filipinos so in other countries, they get more strict when filipinos are around.
all you just have to do is ignore those people because those who are open minded enough and well educated they are the ones who love the filipino people.

Well, you can't really help it if some people have negative perceptions of Filipinos in general. And you also can't blame those who have said negative things based on their own personal experiences. Take Ice for example, and to all those guys who've been duped by our local girls at one time or another.

All countries have their own misconceptions, like all Thai girls are hookers and Thailand has nothing else to offer but their sex industry, Colombia is known as the drug cartel of the world, all Brazilians are kidnappers, the list goes on...

I agree with you though, that people shouldn't be passing on judgement or providing info without any proper research done.

but hey, that's humans for you....

I'm sorry that happened. I knew a great Filipino couple that gave me such a good impression. I've also known some unsavory characters. People are people, no one nationality is better or worse than another & each has it's good and bad people.
People on Y! answers do the same thing about mexicans. Some people can never grow up. Don't worry about it.

Why no longer? probable no longer on your. or my lifetime even though it would desire to take place. We Filipinos have a knack of determining on the incorrect Presidents, so no longer something is impossible....of direction i'm no longer asserting that an african-filipino may be a incorrect selection. in basic terms that each and every thing is feasible.

defending filipinas is a very difficult thing to do. it's sad to say that filipinos are the ones responsible for this. of course not all filipinas are dollar grabbing sluts but there's a high number of filipinas in other countries that make this impressions. the sad thing about this is it leads to stereotyping so people don't have the chance to see what filipinas are really are. they are one of the nicest. they are hardworking,loyal, etc.. values are always with them. those who have negative impressions about the philippines are not well educated and naive. they just believe what they want to believe. philippines is a poor country that's why it's getting picked on a lot. prostitution is all over the world. try amsterdam! all we have to do is respect what we have so people can respect us in return. people will treat you badly because you let them...

we can't do anything about it. we will get tired cleaning the name of filipinos. as long as there's poverty, problems arise. there's one solution actually...

They seem to be so ignorant. Palibhasa, ang alam lang nila ang bansa nila and that shows how self-centered some of them are. Sometimes we can't blame them because their media feature the wrong info about the Filipinos being less civilized or something. That is one fact that proves people to be after one's imperfection. Nawiwili ang tao sa mga aspetong hindi maganda because such a thing would make them better or above the rest.

Well, according to what I read before, Filipinos in America are the most educated among Asians living there. Hndi lang napapansin dahil hindi masyadong matunog ang bansa doon. And this is what many racists should know.

Kung bakit naman mababa ang tingin sa atin is because of some Filipino people who pull Fiipinos down. Isn't that disgusting? Instead na ipagtanggol ang lahi eh gagatungan pa ng mas masama ang sinabi?

So, you and me and the other Filipino participants are the most responsible people on Yahoo Answers to disprove what many people think negatively about us while we are here.

I don't know about the negative stuff, but I have allot of respect for your culture and it's people, my fiancee lives in gingoog and her and her family are the nicest people I've ever had the privilege of meeting, sorry to hear about what angers you but, sorry to say they're ignorant people that like to spread lies.
