I saw a TV show or movie once where a man was shopping and commented to another man that he liked his shirt and tie to match. The other man replied, "you mean, 'a la something'." I can't remember what the term was and I can't remember what the show was that I was watching. I want to use this same term in a story that I'm writing but I don't remember it.

i don't think the man was using an actual fashion term, he was probably saying it with reference to someone else who wears it that way. for instance, if i was to wear red lipstick and a white halter dress, you could say that it was a la marilyn monroe. it just means that it's in the same fashion that someone else would (notably) wear.

I have no idea what you would call that in French.
In English, it's called monochromatic, and it's etymology is Greek.
