When I close my laptop it comes up with an error message something along the lines of, "Quick Launch is not allowing your computer to go into standby." I have messed with the settings, and everything is set right. Could this be a virus, or something was deleted that is not allowing this? Please help!

Did you check the settings under the power management?

On a blank area of your desktop screen, RIGHT CLICK, select the PROPERTIES option at the bottom of the box then click on the the SCREEN SAVER tab at the top of the box. Look in the lower right corner for a button labeled “POWER,” and click the button. This opens the POWER OPTIONS PROPERTY window, where you need to verify several items.

On the POWER SCHEMES tab, make sure you have enabled System Standby for both battery and A/C usage.

On the ADVANCED tab, select the options you would like from the drop-down boxes near the bottom.

Click the OK buttons until you get back to your desktop. This should resolve any problems. If not, call the tech support for your computer for assistance specifically aimed at your laptop.

Good luck!

I am NOT a computer tech, but you may want to try this...
It may just simply be the settings you have set on your POWER OPTIONS. It may be set to "never" on the standby option... If you already checked that, then disregard the following:

Power Saving Options
You can customize Windows XP to save energy. This is especially useful if you leave your computer on for extended periods
of time.
• Right click on and empty spot on the Desktop
• Select Properties
• Select the Screen Saver tab
• Click the Power button
• Choose a Power scheme from the pull down menu
under Power schemes. Usually Home/Office
Desk is suitable for Macalester College users
At this point, it is wise to customize your power
options further. For example, if you need programs
to keep working in the background, even when you
are away, make sure all options other than Turn off
monitor are set to Never. However, if you leave the
computer for long periods of time, you may wish to
enable system standby or hibernation. System
standby places your computer on hold after a period
of time. Hibernation goes a step further; it saves the
state of your system to hard disk and turns off the
computer. When you turn the compter back on,
Windows XP will return to its previous state. To
turn on Hibernation:
• Select a time for the computer to wait while idle
until hibernating from the pull down menu labeled
System hibernates:
• When finished, click the OK button twice

since you do not mention you operating system, I will assume that is is some flavor of XP and not Win2k.

There is a fix in SP2 that address a bug in Quick Launch that causes it to be associated with the wrong programs. You should have the latest update and service packs.

You can try to disable the quick launch bar and see if that is really the cause. If you have added more icons to quick launch (install/uninstall of programs) this can corrupt quick launch.

The only thing I can think of is this:

Right click anywhere on the desktop, choose properties and then click on screen saver tab. Click power, and choose advanced tab. Now you see under "power buttons" , when I close led (or the like), choose standby from the combo list. If you already did this, then sorry, dont know how to fix it.

Try all the other answers! especially the one that says right click your task bar and disable quick launch. If all those ideas fail go to control panel and power options and see if any of those setting are wrong. I think disabling quick launch is the most likely cure though.
