I think that fashion recycles itself because over the past 5,000 years we've done just about everything that people can think of. I also think that it's the worst fashions that make a come back.
Leggings were horrible the first time around. Now, 20 years later, they are an even worse idea because the average dress size of women in the US is a 14. I don't feel that I look good in them, and I'm a 4-6!
Low rise hip huging bell bottoms look terrible on many women, so I'm glad to see them going, but I can't say that skinny jeans are an imporvement.
All the latest fashions are designed by idiots that think that what looks good on the 5'9" 110 lb toothpick models should be the trend. What should the rest of us wear? Give me a break! When are we going to see fashions that are designed for the average woman, and let the toothpicks suffer for once? :-)

There seems to be a generational gap between fashion cycles. For example, the young things bringing back the 80's with fitness clothes, those big-arsed belts over the dresses, highhair, electro-pop crap and the like weren't around in the eighties to remember how bad the fashion was. The early 90's saw a resurgence in the music and fashion of the early 70's the 80's was a response to the 60's and so on. In 10 years time the 90's will be back in vogue. Just you whatch.

Just as well I held onto my big 80s belts!
Fashion is just another way of recycling really (or so it seems). Most stuff you see now that's "new" has already been done but there is always a new generation coming along that will see it now for the first time and make it "fashionable".
Leggings... that's another story. Some things should be banished to the annals of history!!! :-)

What's after the 80's style? It was the balloon pants and really bright colors, right? Can't forget about the white jeans or the jeans with the stone/marble wash. Very geometric shapes on clothing, suspenders...
Oh I will die of laughter when I see that.

No people keep their old stuff and designers do the same thing they reuse the old ideas, but modify them slightly to make them new. Then people with the old items breaks theirs at and talk about back then or try to bound with others due to the like of same clothing or style.
Not amazing practical.
