I am doing marketing research for a project at school, and would like some good information and links on the target market of customers for a local bookstore. I would like demographics of a typical bookstore customer, such as age, education leve, income etc. I have no money to spend, so free, but accurate info is what I need. I am basically looking for info that could help write a business plan for a bookstore to open in my area.

I cannot just ask other book stores because of the extent I need to know, and with the possibility of opening this bookstore locally, I am afraid they may not want to share the information

Also, we do not have a large bookstore in town like Barnes and Noble, just little local bookstores with no place to sit and hang out. Good thought though.

Is asking customers questions outside a store soliciting?

There is the only way to know. You need to interview actual people. Several hundred of them. Just come up to them as they exit the book store and ask them if they would mind answering a few questions about their shopping experience. Ask them if they came in looking for a certain item or just browsing, how long they had to wait at the checkout, if they thought the salesperson was courteous, etc. These questions may be of no use to you, but they will lower the answerers' guard, so that the answerers will more easily disclose the demographic information that you are after. Then you can ask about their age, education, and income.

You could contact Borders, Hastings or some of the other bookstores. Someone there might be able to help you. Although I doubt anyone at Hastings would help you because they are such cheap morons.

The best way to do that for free is to go to bookstores and ask the owners/managers on what their demo is.

I would go to a local bookstore and talk to the owner.

go to Barnes and Nobel's, get a soda, sit at a table, and make a list of who comes in ( you can est ages) you can also ask them (ask Mgr 1st and explain what your doing) simple questions.
