So the manufacturer will use a cast iron liner, which is much harder than aluminum and will have good wear properties. This way, you can get the lightweight benefits of an aluminum engine and have long-wearing cylinder walls.

A cylinder liner is a metal sleeve usual hardened steel. It is used to repair a damaged engine cylinder wall when the damaged cylinder can not be fix with a honing tool.
