I want to get internet at home - do I need a BT landline for whichever provider i choose? I heard I may need to be with BT for 3 months before I can change over to anyone else, but what if i sign up for the 12 month broadband contract with them? is it still possible to swap over after the 3 months are over? Does london have any cable landlines which could be used instead of BT? so much confusion!

Basically, you can connect with a BT line - using ADSL or through a cable TV company using DSL. Some companies are now putting their equipment in to BT exchanges and you can sign with them and you pay your line rental to them and have a contract with them. Contracts vary. I have an 18 month contract - but it's a good deal. Some people say too good - because there is a bit of a waiting list and they haven't got all the new gear in the exchanges yet. if you want to download movies - you may be better off with a cable TV company. What out for download limits. I checked the 3 cheapest providers the other day - most had a 2 gig monthly download limit. I have a 40 gig monthly download limit. It's surprising how much stuff you can download - just going music and pictures. But there will be more video available soon - so think about that. If you want your own website. Look at the amount of space they provide too. I'll give my site as a source - email me if you want more info - about the provider or web sites - whatever. The email address is on every page of my website.

first, answer you need to be with bt for a min 12 months before you can migrate to another i.s.p(internet service provider),you can move but you have to pay a hefty fine of around £80
what router from bt are you using as i was using a voyager 205 and paying £27 per month,i spoke to the bt sales team and im now on the bt home hub for only £22 per month, thats a better router (including wireless) and savingg £5
alot of people seemed disheartened with bt lately, but for overall reliability, service, and sales their not too bad
i have been with 3 other i.s.p,s (tiscali, wannadoo, virgin)and none are any were near the speed of bt,so speak to the bt sales team(just ring 150 free) and tell them you want to move, and they will sell you the best packageso they dont loose you,get them down as much as you can,you may even get them down to under a tenner
as i am from merseyside i am not too sure of the cable landlines in london, stick with bt ,they are upgrading their lines over the next 5 years, expect up to 16 to 32 mbits/sec download speeds.....very fast

you need to use bt but you only pay for the line rental if you plug a phone in then yes you have to pay for any calls you make other than that you just pay line rental which is about a tenner a month
which you would have to pay no matter who you go with and as
for time you can sign up with bt today and change to someone else tomorrow you just get a bill from bt for the time you start to the time your new provider starts that's what we done good luck

BT is very cheap and you get a call package with your broadband. You'd at least need a landline to get broadband. BT has 6 month contracts.

no, its all broadband nowdays you can get ntl broadband without using bt. shop around and pick out the best package for your area. you'll be wanting the highest rate of speed for the best price, email accounts and personal webspace all come as standard whoever provides the best package and has good customer support (not ntl------hint) is the one for you. it does depend on which provider is already in your area or if there only is one isp. to tell you the truth they are all blood suckers and promise everything but deliver bugger all when problems arise, keep on your toes and be very wary of small print beofre you sign anything. another thing to watch out for is after you sign up the first time anybody phoning you for a problem with your bank details they are scammers. ask for their phone number and tell them nothing. security is a by issue for all the isp's
