Open the windows at night, and closed during the day. Also draw your blinds or curtains during the day to keep the sun out. You want to bring in the cooler night air and trap it in during the day (this will not be as effective if you live somewhere very humid, or where it doesn't really cool off at night).

If your room is on the first floor, or somewhere where someone could access the window from outside, you will need to get some locks so that the windows can't be opened more than several inches--enough to let air in, not enough for someone to get in. They sell such things at Home Depot, etc.

Keep the lights off as much as you can. For the times when you do need the lights, change out your bulbs for compact flourescent bulbs, which give off a lot less heat. If you have a TV or computer in your room, those also give off a lot of heat. Avoid using them in the heat of the day.

Running the ceiling vent fan in the bathroom will help pull some of the hot air out of the house. And speaking of the bathroom, try to keep your showers to the early morning or late at night, when it's cooler--that really pumps a lot of heat and humidity into the house.

I'm in Phoenix, and my room is the hottest room in the house (and opening the window is out of the question for 8 months out of the year). You can try putting up window insulation to keep some heat out that way, but there aren't many options aside from a/c or a fan. Good luck - I know how miserable it is to sleep in a hot room.

Have your windows looked at & be sure they have proper insulation strips around them. This will keep the cool air in & the hot air out. Also be sure to put up light diffusing blinds or curtains. Keeping the sunshine out of the room & having it darker will help keep it cool as well.Good luck & be cool.

If the door is usually closed you need to install vents in the door for better airflow. They also make fans that mount in the upper corners of the door to help circulate the air better.
