Benjamin Franklin--because he tried every trade. And in everything he did he bettered our country.
Abraham Lincoln--because he helped our country through the biggest trial, a war against our own self.
Corrie Ten Boom--because she survived German concentration camps during WWII and when it was over she helped the people who persecuted her.

There are lots more, but these are three of my favorites!

As a Buddhist, it would be easy for me to say Gautama Siddhartha, but I'll make an alternate selection. Ashoka the Great, ruler of the Maurya Empire in the 3rd century BCE. He was a man that violently conquered much of India, but when he examined within himself the horror that he had caused, he repented and came a Buddhist. After this, he ruled the empire not with an iron fist but with a heart of peace. Truly an example that even the most foul among humanity can change into a shining light.
