Area of Alaska: 656,424 square miles
Area of contiguous United States: 3,119,999

656,424 / 3,119,999 = .210392375

So, about 1/5 the size.

Alaska is the largest State in the USA (land wise). It is not contiguous to any other state. Contiguous means adjoining, and the only place Alaska is contiguous to is Canada - and if it's a really cold winter, Russia - but that's just ice and probably doesn't count

In inverted fraction form it is larger than twice the state of Texas and others have provided interesting comparisons. World Almanacs published every year and found in book stores are good sources of information like this. Note that Alaska's population is less than that of Rhode Island, the smallest state, although other states have even less population, including North Dakota, Vermont, the District of Columbia, and the least populous state of all, Wyoming. I understand it is also very windy there if wind in the Aleutians is any measure. The wind energy companies have been slow in providing hardware suited for this state.

Alaska is 2 1/2 times the state of Texas. It has the population of Manhattan. It is the state most farthest east and west. It has the longest continuous coastline on any state in the union.

This proved to be not as simple as I expected. The official Alaska web page says Alaska has an area of 656,425 square miles. That converts to 1,700,133 square km. According to www.geographica.org, the USA has a total area of 9,158,960 sq km, so Alaska is 18.6% of the total. But www.mongabay.com quotes the USA as 9,629,091 so the percentage would be 17.6%.

Those figure differences for the USA seem huge to me - that's a difference of 470,131 sq km, or about the size of Cameroon or twice the UK!!

The lower 48 as they are known are not contiguous but superfluous.
