Well funny you should sy that because : In the new Jersey statewide newspaper "The Star Ledger" about 1988 - The syndicated columnist that first reported on the Nixon water-gate scandal:
Jack Anderson reported that a paper was floating around at the National Archives that said that the mother of Dwight D. Eisenhower was a black woman from Virginia. The article asked what does Ike have in common with Ludwig V Beethoven and he said they both had black mothers.

Because while they may start out with good intentions when running (and to answer someone's questions, I do believe Jesse Jackson has ran more than once), they just can't keep the moment through the primaries and everything else. I don't believe the majority of the actual voting population is ready to accept anything other than a white male. And perhaps no one is as good at lying as a white male...the rest of the population is too honest? Those that could have been good (Colin Powell for instance) chose instead not to pursue it...I think for him it as partially at the urging of his wife. It will happen eventually, but there's just so much bigotry yet, it won't happen anytime soon.

Mostly because I don't think a country founded by white male patriarchs is ready for one... People in this country are still too socially conditioned to accept "white male president" as the norm to vote any differently. Also it's a function of who runs: mostly white guys run for president, with a few prominent exceptions. I think a lot of people are afraid of what might change in this country if a woman or a black person (of either gender) was elected president. It's just too weird of an idea for many people. Given that most of the American bureaucracy is made of of white men, it might be seen as strange for this government to actually be led by someone who doesn't fit that description. I, however, think it might very well do this country some good to have a "minority" president.

The same reason ther hasn't been a hispanic president.

They haven't been involved in politics long enough for one to make an impact. To make a national impact is difficult at best. The other aspect to get considered for a national ticket is fund raising ability.

Once there is a viable candidate the party will start grooming for them that position. Until then its the same choice, white men.

My guess is that the first minority president will be a vice president first and will run after serving with a strong President.

Tradition and prejudice among other reasons. Look what happened to that female church teacher who got fired just for being a woman, on the basis of a scripture saying "Women ought to keep silent". The very fact we could have a female candidate and even president in '08 is history making.

I haven't any doubt that there are qualified black females accessible who could have run for president. Condileeza Rice is merely one in all them....yet once you have chose somebody who has that 'celeb' potential like Reagan did, why no longer Oprah??

Votes! The person with the most votes wins. One of these days there will be a black and or female president. I just hope when something goes wrong like a war breaks out, you don't say how dumb they are.

Everyone here seems to overlook the Electoral College. Even if a minority was popular across the country, those casting the electoral votes may be pressured to vote for the "safe" (read rich, white male).

The popularity of the minority may be spread too thin across the country to force the electoral votes.

Oh, and don't forget the Christian Coalition, who's supposed to love everyone, would probably keel over if it ever happened. And the conservatives must not upset them lest they be crucified themselves!

Because it's so hard to break into politics at the highest levels if you're a minority. It's still the good-old-boy system down in Washington. It's also impossible to become President if you're not already wealthy and well connected.

I think there hasn't been a black president because, based on what I've viewed from others, white people don't trust the black population. Female...we will have one very soon. Hiliary Clinton will win the next election.
