It will eventually unite again. The major problem is that the Bush administration has dragged everything as far right as they can, and the far left obviously isn't liking it. So they take the other extreme in an attempt to drag America that direction. This of course winds up polarizing people, mostly because those in the middle (John McCain, Hilary Clinton, Joe Leiberman, Colin Powell) are seen as enemies of their own side, as "traitors to the cause" and if you go with them you are a "traitor" as well. So everyone polarizes to the side they think is right, when the right answer is almost always in the middle. But once the Bush administration leaves, and as long as no one else loses their mind going far left/right in the next election it will balance out again. It may or may not be the next one, but it will balance eventually.

That would be hard to say. With the increased role of the media, and internet, in our day and age, where people (including children) can explore the world and different ideas for themselves, and share their personal feelings with the rest of the world in media such as blogs, it seems unlikely that we would go back to being "the country of the 50's". One unifying factor of the 50's was the Cold War, and the "Red Scare". Another was the relative peace and prosperity of that era. The 50's was an era that: 1) Preceded the disillusioning experience of the Vietnam War. 2) Preceded the turbulent but important and path blazing activity of the civil rights movements of the 60's.

Maybe a half truth. True, we have never been so divided. But recently, on September 12, 2001 the country was more unified than ever before in history. And, nearly all other countries were at our side, on our side, in solidarity.
Look what's happened in five short years! No many people could have achieved this huge change. What leadership!

yes after the next major terrorist attack which will happen!!! Only then will we be united. We can all disagree on abortion, health care, and taxes but we need to be united in the effort to defeat the radicals.I am a Liberal on most issues except personal responsibility and the war against these 7th century wackos.I don't tow the line of the wacko left they are completely in denial of the current situation with the Wahhabi movement in the middle east.So yes we will be united again but only after a few more thousand people die sad to say.

I think that the US today is far more united than, say, the US of the Grapes of Wrath (1929 - 40) , of the McCarthy hearings (1950 -51), or of the Japanese internment camps (1941 - 45).
We are fortunate now in that we have the ability to balance our own sense of identity and security with the free discussion of divergent ideas. More unity than this could be dangerous in itself - a single way of thinking often leads to repression and stagnation.
Chin up! Today's USA is pretty good place to be, all things considered :)

It doesn't seem like it. There don't seem to be any issues that we can agree on. The War on Terror, taxes, education, abortion, homosexual unions, the environment, all of it, everyone seems to be divided. It wasn't that long ago that the things that united us were more important than the things that divided us but the lunatic fringes, Hollywood, and the media have destroyed those and thrown us into a national identity crisis. 9/11didn't even unite us for very long. People are beginning to reach for any and every cult and fringe group that promises them an identity and that continues to splinter us even further.

Not as long as comments like "as long as Libs have their way" keep rearing their ugly heads. We've really lost sight of being a world leader and taking care of our own people. I blame the current administration as well as others INCLUDING some Democrats. We spend so much time trying to align ourselves against each other it just makes me sick. This country used to stand for something and until we can intelligently discuss OUR problems without the "liberals/conservatives are ruining the world" we'll continue to be divided.

To answer your question simply...NO!
There is no longer a "United" States. Just look at the shortsighted answers you received. (as long as the liberals blah blah blah).
The useless debate of liberals vs. conservatives or democrats vs. republicans is the stupid trap that all Americans are falling into. This "fake rage" is what must really be addressed. Anyone that perpetrates this thought process is UN-American and is not looking for solutions with their neighbor/fellow American citizens.

Hopefully. We need to get rid of all liberals and other voices of dissent (by any means necessary). ONE country, One people, ONE leader. The terrorists have created a state of emergency. Our leader must be able to act without restraint. If his domestic opponents are preventing him form saving us from the terrorists, they must be removed. Only the leader is in a position to know who must be removed and by what means. I suggest a brief moratorium on elections until the war on terror is over. Our leader will tell us when its over. He is an honest and good man. I trust him. Do you?

I think the US is on its way to another civil war. That will be the only thing that will united the US again.
