"The Narrows shelter (3CW35), located just below a ridge crest east of Mountainburg."

The above sentence seems to be some type of coded location indicator of a prehistoric bluff shelter near where I live in NW Arkansas and I would love to take my girlfriend there and allow her to cautiously observe and take photos of the indian rock art as she is wanting to change her major to anthropology from her current major of biology at the U of Arkansas. Are the numbers and letters somehow an indication of longitude and/or latitude? Any assistance or recommendations from you fine folks who participate with Yahoo Answers is greatly appreciated!!!!!

I don't know how to answer the decoding of the (3CW35) but if you go to 35.38'02.14N, 94.08'26.23W you will find what you're looking for.

Better yet, go to Mountainburg (just south of Lake Fort Smith State Park) and ask the locals the best way to get there.

Also consider the Cavanah Mounds in south Fort Smith, Arkansas.

This number refers to the research document file on the ridge's archaeological findings etc. This was submitted to the University of Arkansa Museum under the title :University of Arkansas Museum files, 3CW35. Thus, all official information on it would be there. It was Clyde Dollar who made a brief report, and submitted excavated artifacts (from the site of many on his visits there-between November 1, 1957 and April 1958). He submitted them to the museum on April 29th, 1958.

The 35 at the end of the number represent the year A.D. 1435 and is indicative of a feature that was created around that time.
I can't tell you much about the rest but the C could stand for the name of who submitted the report ( Clyde).

This is part of the US archaeological site designation system. The first number is the state, the two letters are for the county and the final number is the site number within that county.

3CW35...
given how the sequence was given after the name of the site...
more than likely, this is referring to the site number designation given by the archaeologist who researched the site.
i am sure that if she were to ask the anthropology teacher what the numbers were, he would know
