In our climate, autumn is when the birds begin to migrate. The wind blows more from the north (probably helping the flocks of birds heading southward), and evenings are cool. Sunset comes early, often bringing frost. The apples are ripening; tree leaves turn bright yellow or red or orange, and fall gradually off the trees. The wild animals fatten themselves for the winter by eating the nuts and seeds which are now ripe. Autumn is a time of plenty, before the coming of winter.

Like tghe others I'd say when the leaves change color and begin to fall but also when the temperture changes and it begins to get cooler. Cooler temps cause colorful leaves because trees know that winter is on its way.
