The BBC are hardly the voice of any music movement but they may just be on to something here.
Most people who say hip-hop is prone to promoting violence have only been exposed to that side of hip hop that the major music companies market to the mainstream. There are a myriad of hip hop artist who do not promote anything like what most people in the mainstream think hip hop is.
True hip hop has always been a way for the youth to channel their creative energies away from crime and toward making a positive difference in society. It espouses positive change - not the negative stereotypes that the MTV-esque rappers like to portray. Before a certain strand of "hip hop" became a pop chart mainstay - it was a voice of social conscience providing social commentary on a number of societal ills. The artists who provided this positive social voice are still around today and many more have sprung up to continue this tradition.

They are saying that it inhibits violence? Usually I hear people claiming it incites violence. I suppose it is further proof that the so-called experts can't predict that night will follow day.

"cop killer"
anyone.............anyone
Because there have been alot of rap that is VERY violent. Most songs will talk about guns, killing, objectification of women.
OF COURSE so do a lot of rock music too.
And before anyone calls it a race thing let me point out that Rock music has taken it's fair share of censorship.
