Faster than light communication is possible, but the scientists are no fools, because it is the scientists that discovered a phenomenon called "quantum entaglement", which allow you to instantly communicate the state of a particle to any amount of distance. This possibly mean that in the future we can use quantum entanglement to send 0's and 1's (binary information) across the universe without any limitation in speed.
BTW, your idea of using a stick long enough to reach from the Earth to the Sun is just silly. First of all, can you actually make a stick that long to prove your point? Second, upon closer inspection, you'll discovered that a stick is not made up of a single piece of material, but trillions and trillions of atoms. When you move the stick, your end will have move, but not the other end. As a matter of fact, the fastest that you can communicate the fact that the your end of the stick has moved is the speed of light.

Remember, the stick is simply made up of a bunch of molecules (which are also particles and/or waves). When you push on one end of the stick, you are not pushing on one large object, but rather a interconnected set of pieces. You would compress the pieces on one side, so the wave would roll across the Solar System until it finally propogated and moved the stick on the other side. The speed of this propogation would be equal or less than light.
Think of the stick as a spring. When you push (or pull) the spring on one side, you have to wait until the equal action applies on the other.

You probably have to take into account the flexibility of the stick that would prevent you to exert a rectilinear movement, and even if that was not a problem, there's still the compacting that is certainly slower than light. and the tremendous mass of that stick! Then again... a 150,000,000 kms stick? Wow!

all previous replies are quite darn well correct... now of quantum theory, it is fastr than light communication. yes. to be exact it's instantaneous. all i'm saying is, u could be on Galaxy alpha 9 and quantum communication would be faster. it's just really hard, complicated, potentially dangerous physics... that make no sense to the simple minded.

Yes. Things can travel faster than light can. Its just REALLY REALLY fast. 'As Fast as light' is just a turn of phrase. Look up CERN, a swiss physics institute - they are the world leaders in this kind of thing.
