If you are in UK - try "Somnus" which is available at Boots. That's the one that works best for me, and it usually takes a hefty bang on the head with a pile driver to get me off!!!
You could also try a combination of old fashioned remedies (some of which work even bestter than the pile driver)
I'm sure you've heard of and tried many of these, but here goes:
1. Fantastic sustained sex with someone you trust and love
2. Other vigorous physical activity - DIY, long walk, good workout, until shattered.
3. The Japanese swear by half an hour in a hot bath. This helps me and I include fragrant bubble bath and candles.
4. The right sort of chilled music - experiement until you find your favourite
5. Milky drinks
Hope this helps

Pills and tablets are like marbles where they pass right through your system with little abosorption (5-7%) into your body. If you are looking for supplements that are to a particle size that is 99% abosorbed into your body, you might want to check out some liquid nutrtional products such as "Vibe". This is an all-in-one foundational nutritional supplement that i take. It's not specifically geared towards sleeping but I have experienced better sleep after i started taking it and i think you might find better results with something like this than with a tablet that can actually do more damage to your system than it is doing good.

Valerian and melatonin are pretty good. Sleepy time tea or chamomile. A good multivitamin. Calcium-magnesium-zinc tablets 3 times a day with meals. Selenium 100-200 mcg a day helps if you are deficient in the mineral.
Monavie juice has helped some people rest better.

the best supplement for sleep is valerium- but it stinks!!! And theres still some controversy about side effects. Melatonin is good. You also might want to take some relaxing teas like chamomile and try aromatherepy. I know you want a supplement but you might have to make some life style changes as well to get effective sleep.

'Calms' were recommended to me at a time of stress. I have used Valerian, but now find that 5HTP Serotonin (Healthspan) helps me sleep.
.
A Doctor on TV praises the lettuce sandwich - (it works) The lettuce has something in it that releases endorphins to relax and happify you, and the bread is a carbohydrate that promotes sleepiness. A milky drink works in the same way (but is not as good as a lettuce sandwich. He said you only need one lettuce leaf, between bread and light butter.

i found that sleeping tablets ie herbal ones did not help me that much.
Try solving the route of the problem, if it is stress try passaflora (i think this how you spell it!)
this is herbal, and chills you out nicely which helps with sleep patterns as you become more relaxed etc.
This works so well for me - Ive even used it when teaching teens with behaviour problems - it made me get through the eve with ease
