There are lessons to be learned from history that show being a superpower is all ways going to be hard work! and very expensive .The amount of energy (physical / financial/ military) is enormously draining on a countries economy ! and will all ways be the cause of its ultimate downfall..
The British empire spanned the globe and lasted over getting on for 300 years!. Britain really did rule more than a quarter of the world, The riches earned from the empire where used up defending the empire in countless wars and growing anarchy!.
Since the end of the second world war when Britain's empire finally was lost forever, there have been two super powers, USA and Russia!. Russia failed to make the grade because it could not cope with the hugely more technology driven/efficient US!.
At the moment The US is both a superpower in terms of its military and economic strength!.. In the not too distant future another superpower will emerge! china! due to its growing economic influences.
However! lurking on the side lines are the Russians, they have pulled their way back into the big league simply because they have huge amounts of gas and oil! - .this will ensure that even though they are no longer a world class military superpower they will become a world class economic superpower , again bringing ever increasing influence on the world stage.

That's the best Q I've read in a while. Take into account that Ahmad Khazai is Pres of Afganistan. It's no secret that he is a "former" CIA agent, (and "former" executive in Haliburtan). So the USA effectivly runs the show around Kabul via the Afghan govt, and the rest of the country with the military. I don't think the US is bogged down there, it has quite a strong control for airbases and pipelines etc.
3 muslim countries have been "smacked around the shop" by the US (and Israel), since 2001, I think being a superpower IS enough.

It isnt just simple as dont have war anymore...
America, is dying, they have very few resources left, and most of them, they're not allowed to touch in alaska.
They need Oil mostly, but what happens when it runs out in like 20 years?
The world doesnt resolve round the dam USA, they may be a super power, but, Britian, China, Iran and a few others still are.
Iran is arch emeny with Iraq, lot of **** in their historys, its just conflicts, noting you can do, they allway happen, all ways will, always have.

Just goes to show that at the end of the day there are no winners. The USA refuses to learn the lessons of 'nam and is therefore doomed to repeat her mistakes.
Sure as heck would hate to face the bill for all of this - let them sort themselves out - they will anyway.
