Not knowing how old your computer really is the drive could be failing or the last thing he did (install update in background?) did not complete correctly. It could also be a problem with memory or the motherboard. I really can't tell you much more from the description. I would advise against doing any furthur work on it if the information is vital. Personally, the best advice I can give you is take it to a service center recommended by the maker. These kind of things happen all the time and I hear this daily. You need to do backups if the information is important. If it is not worth backing up then it is not worth worrying about when the computer fails.
Otherwise:
Get a new replacement hard drive and have it installed if you cannot do the work yourself. Have the recovery CD's available to reinstall the OS. Get an external 2.5" drive enclosure, make sure it includes a power supply. Many older hard drives in laptops require more current than the USB cable alone can supply. Once the OS has been reinstalled, then attach the external drive and find the data that is vital an copy it to the new drive. If it is really important then make a backup CD of the data or get another external hard drive like Seagate or Buffalo which come with automatic backup software.

go in to safe mode try a system restore if permitted
or try last good boot up when windows worked
boot from cd
try the 2 nd repair option
or replace windows files only
as long as you do not format you can do it
save all data to disc then format and start a fresh
use mains power if possible remove the battery in case this is causing the problem

To do this press F8 when th computer is starting up, but before the widows logo appears, a menu will come up, choose safe mode. If u canm get in then copy your importand files ond a flash drive/cd etc.
Then do a Repair install of windows not a new install this should not delete any files on the pc, but repair any damages system files.

Try opening in safe mode.. e.g
power up (reboot) while this is happen push F8 key - just keep tapping it as it is booting up.
You will then get a menu select Safe mode
See if that works first... If not see an expert.

It sounds like he should reformat the hard drive. It's a pain to do, but hey, at least it will be worth it...for the next 3 month anyway. Back up all of the important information BEFORE you reformat it. Also, just tell him to get a Mac. They're so much easier.

There is a battery inside the computer that might need replaced. Its the battery that stores the start up information. In my computer it was about the size of a quarter.

Someone must have deleted an important file dealing with the Windows/Mac program
you will have to reinstall Windows/ Mac, meaning that all the files will be deleted
UNLESS!
you have a 2nd harddrive with nothing (or unimportant files) on it
download Windows with that "trash" harddrive and you can plug in ur important harddrive after you are done so you have all your important files

If all else fails, remove the hard drive and ship it to data recovery company. They can get data from the HD even if it has been damaged.
