Most adults need 8 hours. Children need up to 10-12 hours a day

YOU sleep as MUCH as you need to.
As most people say here, about 10-12 for kids...and 8 for adults.
IF you find yourself not feeling rested after sleeping 8-10 hours you probably have some sleep disorder. See your doctor.

In most cases, sleep disorders can be easily managed once they are properly diagnosed. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. It occurs more often in women and in the elderly.
The amount of sleep that a person needs to function normally depends on several factors (e.g., age). Infants sleep most of the day (about 16 hours); teenagers usually need about 9 hours a day; and adults need an average of 7 to 8 hours a day. Although elderly adults require about as much sleep as young adults, they usually sleep for shorter periods and spend less time in deep stages of sleep. About 50% of adults over the age of 65 have some type of sleep disorder, although it is not clear whether this is a normal part of aging or a result of medications that older people commonly use

It's totally up to the individual. I need between 7-8 hrs but in a pinch 6 will do. But each person has its own needs. The average is 7-8 but it can be more or less. It is said that Edison needed only 3 hrs a night.

Typically the older we get, the less sleep our body needs. As we reach adulthood, we generally can get by just fine with 5-6 hours of sleep at night. Of course this also depends on the individuals lifestyle and typical work schedule. If a person usually works midnight shifts, it is very difficult for the body to adjust to this backwards sleep pattern.

Depends on the person. I do fine with 6 hours, but I know other adults who require at least 8 hours to function properly. I have a friend who gets by on 4 1/2 hours a night....

Usually its 8 hours but some people can sleep for just 6 or 7 hours and still feel well. When we are asleep, our body starts to rejuvinate and heal itself. Sleeping for just 4 to 5 hours can be very harmful even if some people get accustomed to it because their immune system goes down and they usually get sick very quickly. Take care of your body if you want to live longer. Sleeping 8 hours a day is still the best.

"They" say you need to hit REM sleep 4-6 times a day and that it takes 90 minutes to do that once. So 6-9 would be about right, preherably 9.
