If you live in an apartment, control is the key. Your landlord should be made responsible for "bug bombs", etc. In you apartment, keep the roach traps handy, place them out of sight in the kitchen (you may need two or three, bathroom, bedrooms, etc. Yes, roaches seem to laugh at the bug sprays, but they do die from it.) However, roaches reproduce at an alarming rate. If you see one, you have thousands.
If you live in your own home, call a professional pest control company and be prepared to move out of your house for a couple of days so they can "bomb" your house. This is an extensive process where you need to take everything out of you cabinets (dishes cups, knives, forks, etc) and cover them. Take all of your clothes and cover them too, and get rid of all of your food in your cabinets because you will not be able to eat it again. The exterminators will fumigate your home and the process takes a day. You most likely won't be able to go back the next day until your house is aired out for several hours. Cleanup will be massive as dead roaches will be everywhere. Prepare to wash all of your sheets and bed spreads.
Once this is done, make sure you are not re-infested. Do not keep paper shopping bags in you home as roaches hide in the folds and you carry them home from the supermarket. This is also true of boxes from stores as well. If you work in a place with roaches, make sure you shake yourself free of all bugs before you walk in your home. A roach infestation is extremely difficult to get rid of. Good luck.

You need to call a bug man. They have insecticides that are stronger and the spray lasts for 3 months or so. All the money that you are spending on the stuff that does not work, you can spend one time and call the bug man. You can look in the phone book under Exterminators. Good Luck!

Keep your house super clean, buy roach traps, spray, if you are in a building situation you may need to contact the owner and make them more aware of the problem. When you see them even though its gross squish them. When making dinner never leave anything out before sitting down. Good Luck

once you have roaches you have them forevere, both male and female roaches lay eggs of 300-900 roaches. Best thing to do is move.
Roaches are the nastyist things I will not live with. They can get into sealed food.

Take two small blocks of wood, 6 inches by 6 inches and about 1 inch thick, place the roach on the first block of wood and then smack it with the second one, instant kill, guaranteed!
