No real purpose. It's a throwback to the tradition of having a queen/king as the symbolic head of England. Tony Blair is probably closer to being the actual "person in charge"
I think the royalty's purpose is to provide paparazzi with jobs so that we English can pick up the tabloids the next morning and go "Did'ya (sic) 'ear (sic) what so and so did? 'E (sic) must be a daft git 'en? (sic)"

Continuity in upper management. Prime ministers come and go, but the monarch goes on for ever, or at least a long time. The UK is a constitutional, parliamentary, monarchy by the way.

What is the point of this question?
The Royal Family is a historical treasure for the nation. It serves to tie disperate peoples together, link the past with the future, and serves as a focal point of, and give legitimacy to, government.

They are just figureheads really. Their duties are largely ceremonial.
The Royal Family is also the greatest thing that has ever happened to the tourism industry.

They have VERY important things to do. First they must learn how to properly wave............then they have to learn how to wear those big expensive hats. Then they must learn how to take expensive holidays in Bora Bora while looking fab on the beach while hiding from reporters. It's a tough job!
