I got half of my exes retirement benefits in a divorce. I though once that was on paper in court, that was it. But, I found out afterwards it that part needs to be finished seperately. My lawyer said he would need to bring in others, because my ex has government benefits (U.S. Postal service) and he has not had much experience with those. They need to do something called 'quadrille', I believe. I have had a run of bad luck since my divorce, and need to do this as low cost as possible. What should I do?

The USPS can be a pain to deal with in a divorce. Go to the USPS web site. You will find a very helpful manual for this process.

The usual way to handle dividing retirement in a divorce is a QUADRO (QUAlifying Domestic Relations Order), forms for which are available at many web sites for a small fee.

The USPS only requires a certified copy of the court's order. It will not give you any money. It will pay you your share monthly on his retirement.

Went through the same thing from the other side. My Ex got 1/2 of my retirement. The quadro (I think this is what it is called) is the only way to do it (at least in NJ). My ex's lawyer did the work and sent it to my employer. I don't know about federal benefits.

Don't be in a rush and do your homework on this subject. I am not familiar with quadrille. Google it and then go to a law library too to look it up and see what they say. Also, there are low or no cost legal advice out there, do some digging. Contact a womens center to see if they can help too.
