It is "land of the morning calm" not broken. You have to know the history of Korea but...

***In 1392, a dynasty established by a military coup revived the name Joseon (조선, 朝鮮) (the official state name becoming Daejoseonguk - 대조선국, 大朝鮮國). The Chinese characters were often translated into English as "morning calm," and Korea's English nickname became "The Land of the Morning Calm"; however, this interpretation is not often used in the Korean language, and is more familiar to Koreans as a back-translation from English.***

***Taken from Wikipedia***

So that's basically it. So if you want to know the real translation...

Dae (대) - GREAT
joseon (조선) - JOSEON
guk (국) - NATION

The Great Joseon Nation. Not the Land of the Morning Calm. But I would have to say...the latter one has a nicer flow. <(^_^)>

Can't remember where I heard this but Korea was a whole country [대조선국] before the Korean War broke. After the war it was split into 2, North & South. No one knows for sure when will the 2 Koreas will be able to be one again, since there's still a silent war between them. Hence, DMZ. That's why instead of Land of the Morning Calm, it is now known as Land of the Broken Calm.

Interestingly enough, this was mentioned in an episode of M*A*S*H. It's called "the land of the broken calm" because there has been one type of war or occupation going on in the Korean peninsula for the past 5,000 years. I guess if people from other countries would stop trying to take it over or plant troops there it could get back to being a calm land...

Yes, jpklla is right. It's not "land of the broken calm" but "Land of the Morning Calm", mistranslated from Deh-jo-sun-guk.
