They are no longer in office and have no power over anything so why do they need to be so highly protected?

They piss so many people off while they were in office, they need protective 4 LIFE!!!!!

I believe it's because living former presidents are still in the line of succession to occupy the presidency in the event our government is decapitated. In order words, if someone drops a nuke on Washington D.C. and wipes out all the federal elected officials, a former president can assume the command of our armed forces.

Because even when out of power, they're regarded as First Citizens and people worthy of respect and protection. Not to mention that there are probably lots of kooks from all sides of the political spectrum willing to beat them up or gun them down.

Kidnapping.

Just think of what they know... all the secrets of the government at the time they were President. Think of it as an insurance policy for the 'former' secrets of the U.S.

Oh come on, didn't you sometimes wish somebody would put a bullet in Nixon. When he was still alive? And Regan, before he forgot every evil thing he did? It would have been no justice after word.

The protection is THEIR choice. An ex president can WAIVE the Secret Service protection.

Clinton opted for the protection, at a cost of $10,000 a month, which is the same as his mortgage.............interesting........
