Not necessarily. I think whoever did more damage to the other should get more detention.

The fact that you were in a fight at all, regardless of the size of the combatants, is reason for some self analysis (at the very least) to think of more mature ways to deal with a situation like that the next time it happens. And detention time is affordable time to use for that purpose. Try to be better in that respect than the other guy.

Anyone can fight, as we witness each day between countries. Few seem to put forth much effort in thinking of other ways to resolve serious problems.

Nope, a fights a fight.
Unless, you are some big bully that intentionally go after smaller people.
If not then that's silly to give a jerk a free pass to aggravate and fight just because they are smaller.
But from now on, don't fight. Physically pounding on someone doesn't solve a thing.
I know you've heard this before.. but just walk away, say your piece and then forget about it.. whether you're right or wrong.. You really will end up being the bigger person.

Not necessarily, but at the same time don't get overly worked up about it either. It is one of those many things you will come across in life where it sucks and it may not be right, but you will end spending too much energy and anger trying to fix it than it is worth.

You could try talking to the principle and admit that you were wrong for fighting, and ask why you got the heaviest penalty. But when you talk to him, do not be angry, and watch your body language. A smile, a handshake, and good morning might help start the talk off right.

Where I teach, you get an automatic 3 day suspension for fight no matter who starts or finishes it.
Detention sounds much better to me than suspension.
