I have gone through two boxes of tissue paper for my nose, I haven't been able to sleep for 48 hours, and I feel more miserable than I remember feeling in a long time. I only work with a few people and I am afraid of making everyone in the office sick. I just help out for a few hours everyday, and if everyone in the office got sick, the whole place would come to a standstill. However, I have a two-month period to prove my worthiness to this employer for a raise and a permanent position, and I would like to not miss any days during that time. What do I do?
Also: Another employee that covers shifts for me anyhow will be there, but I don't want it to seem like I plan on having her work for me all the time.

Call your boss and explain what's going on. He may just tell you to stay home and get some rest. However, there are those bosses that will tell you to stay home and then use your absence against you later.
I quit my last job for just that reason. Earlier this year, I was out for a month due to pneumonia and then a couple of months ago I was rear-ended on the highway and had to call in for a couple of days. In both cases, I turned in doctor's notes and ER discharge papers and I was still written up for excessive absenteeism with a warning that the next time I was absent, I would be suspended without pay for three days, the time after that I would be suspended for five days and the time after that I would be fired. The next day, I turned in my two weeks notice and haven't had any regrets about it.
There are some people that abuse the system, but if you have a legitimate excuse, then you have every right to call in. I'm sure your co-workers won't like having to cover for you, but they would like getting sick because of you even less.
Good luck and go climb back into bed and get some rest!

I just started a job last monday, and I got really sick yesterday. I told a few people I didnt feel well early in the day and was quiet at my desk avoiding as much contact as possible. When it got too much to handle I went into my boss and it was obvious I was sick. He said to go home and take care of myself and I did. That was at like 3pm yesterday so I made sure to be on time today but when asked how I felt I said "eh" so that if it gets bad again, he knows it wasnt fake. You can be sick and dying but if you call and don't try they may never believe you, some bosses are just like that. If you do call out, get a dr's note

It depends on the company and your supervisor and just how sick you really are. Most people will work right through a common cold. However, if you are that sick, I would think someone would notice and tell you to go home.
If it were me, I would go in sick, look as miserable as possible and then talk to my boss about going home. Happened to me a few years back and, scared as I was to bring it up, he was very understanding.
Feel better!

I dont think you will like my answer but if you have just started there I wouldnt call in sick under any circumstanses. You can be sick at home or sick at work. Its more productive to be sick at work and will show your level of commitment if you stay. When you go home after work crash and take medicine but stay at work and show them they are important to you.

Buy some Dayquil or some other non-drowsy cold remedy and some hand sanitizer (use frequently) and go in. You'll get points for trying to go in even if you get sent home. However, if you have a fever - stay home.

Call you boss and talk to him about it. He will tell you what he want of you and will not hold it against you. This is what your boss expects from you. Show him the respect he has earned and deserves and he will respond in your best interest.

When you're sick, you're sick.. Nothing you can do about it. I wouldn't go in because then like you said you'll be getting everyone else sick.
