What is the order of the planets in the solar system? I heard from someone that Pluto and Neptune actually take turns being the farthest away. His reasoning was that because their eliptical orbits are different, Pluto isn't always the farthest away from the Sun. Is that true? If so, which planet is closer to the sun at this point in time- Neptune or Pluto? Could you give a link?

Pluto is sometimes closer to the Sun than Neptune, and was in the 1970s - 1990s, but is now farther. Search for the word "eccentric" in the source below.

Currently, there are nine well-known planets in our Solar system. But no longer is Pluto a lonely outpost at the edge of an unknown frontier. Continued discoveries reveal that astronomers are only on the verge of discovering vast new worlds beyond - in the Kuiper Belt and possibly the Oort Cloud. At the same time, new moons are also being discovered, both around existing planets and within these mysterious new worlds. Once the existence of a moon is confirmed and its orbit determined, the moon is given a final name by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the organization that assumed this task since 1919.

But the fact above, the number of planets, could change in a few hours (Aug 24th,2006) after the IAU vote on a new planet definition.

You can read all about it here:

This is exiting!!! (my thought)

Yes, Pluto's orbit goes inside of Neptune's in some part. currently Pluto is farther away and will be like that for the rest of our lifetimes.

Pluto has an eccentric orbit that every few years brings it closer to the sun than Neptune. Right now Pluto is back to being the furthest planet.
There are currently 9 planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars Jupiter, Saturn , Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. There is talk of reclassifying two known bodies as planets, including Pluto's moon Charon.

Yes, Pluto and Neptune sometimes exchange places as the most distant planet from the Sun. Otherwise, the order of the planets (starting from the Sun) is Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The asteroid belt is between Mars and Jupiter, and the Kuiper Belt (from which comets originate) is well beyond Pluto.

The nine planets that orbit the sun are (in order from the sun): Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Well the order is

1. Mercury
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Mars
5. Jupiter
6. Saturn
7. Urenus
8. Neptune and
9. Pluto

But pluto's orbit is a bit different to others - it is more elepsical than others - because of this, there is aperiod that Pluto becomes the 8th Planet and Urenus becomes the 9th. I think it is so these days.
