When you burn hexane, you might notice that the flames give off a rough, ashy black residue. Toluene, and any other derivitives of benzene, burns more cleanly and does not give off any residue. When you ignite a mystery substance in a lab, for example, and it gives off a clean flame with no residue, then you can might conclude that there is a benzene ring in the unknown compound.
