I am trying to add or remove programs in the control panel on my computer. But when I select "Add or remove programs" A message comes up saying"Add or remove programs has been restricted. Please check with your administrator" What is this and how can I change the restrictions to allow me to remove old stuff! I'm not quiet sure how this came about, but in the past I have had no problems. By the way, its windows xp home on my Dell laptop. THANX

You will have to log in as an Administrator to do anything - even to remove the restriction on your account!

Check what other users have accounts on your machine. Control Panel, User Accounts should show you which ones have Administrator rights and which are Limited.

It appears you or someone else has taken the Administrator privaleges off yourself.
to fix.

Click on start(bottom left)
Goto top and click on the pic show at the top of the start menu
Click on home on the top line Left side
You will get a screen with 2 options e.g Pick a Task and
Pick account to change
Under pick a task click on change an account

The next screen should show you where you stand e.g administrator or Guest
Click on the pic that applies to you whether admin or not
Click on change my account type.

You should be able to work it out from there..

You can go into user accounts in the Control panel and do the same - just another way of getting there.

Best of luck

In control panel go to User Accounts and be sure you are listed as an administrator.

You may have accidently created a second user account on your computer. To check this, go to start, log off, and after it logs off you will see if there are more than one account. if so, log on using the one that says owner or administrator ... depends on how your computer was set up ... and hopefully there isn't a password :-/ after that mmm ... you may have to take it to a computershop or someone that you can trust with your computer and have them 'repair' it

This means you do not have administrator rights to uninstall. Reboot into safe mode and go into admin mode...
