To swear can mean either to make an oath, or to utter profanity.

A court witness will have to swear to tell the truth, sometimes by the name of a deity or upon things considered holy, for example a Bible or a Qur'an.

Use of this type of swearing in inappropriate or trivial circumstances, or in some traditions "taking the Lord's name in vain," is often considered wrong or sinful. The term swearing in common speech took on this meaning. Some current swearwords have this literal origin, either in straightforward use, for example for Christ's sake, or by way of a minced oath.

In my view swearing is what the reciepient makes of it. Swearing as an expression of anger is fine but I do not agree with swearing at someone or about them.

Because the words evoke concepts or feelings that are considered "impolite".

I have only two objections to the commonality of profanity:

1) It reduces the effect of a words. To use a non-profanity, I am sick and tired of the word "basically", it has lost its usefulness due to overuse.

2) It shows a lack of talent and creativity. There's an insult from ancient Greece:

"Don't throw rocks at the crowd. You might hit your father."

It's triply insulting without using any profanity: it suggests the person is a bastard child, his mother is a whore, and his father is of low class.

Swearing shows that you lack a grasp of your own language. There are many words that can be used letting loose a load of exoletives.

Well your english dictionary does not use the vulger words that come out of some people mouths. It shows a lack of education. They are not polite so in return people take that as rude?
I would say it is inappropriate to use them.

It really shows lack of self control. It is usually done in anger. And if "Jesus" or "Jesus Christ" is used in anger, it is NOT done as a prayer. Some people believe if they speak the name of God when they are angry, it somehow "doesn't count" as a swear word. Well, I have news for you: You shall NOT take the name of the Lord your God in vain. This means without purpose, without a reason, without meaning. To do it in anger is meaningless to you and God. To you it brings guilt. Exodus 20--you can read it for yourself.

For women, it is considered un-ladylike to swear. For other people, it offends their sense of propriety or religion, but I have no idea how that came to be. I guess if it didn't offend certain people, it wouldn't really be swearing.

Swearing attracts negative energy. Why swear? it's not necessary.

Because some people are offended by it. It shows a lack of respect for others.
