Quite the opposite. Random violent offences are almost unheard of. You need to watch out for pickpockets around Causeway Bay, Mongkok and Sham Shui Po, but other than that, nearly all the violent crime reported is domestic. It's quite normal for lone females to walk home long after midnight in safety.

That applies to the urban areas, anyway; there have been some incidences of robbery with violence in the country parks, but they seem to have stopped in the last few months.

Of course, if you decide to stray into Triad territory and attempt freelance pimping work, or selling drugs, then you will be thrashed to a pulp and thrown into the harbour ;)

Not at all.....certainly not more than any other major city. Just keep hold of your bag (my friend had hers snatched by a man going past on a moped) and get a guidebook which will tell you which areas to avoid etc.

The good thing about Hong Kong is that it's always busy, night and day, so (unless maybe you're wandering the streets at 5am) there are always lots of people around. I spent 8 days there and didn't feel unsafe once. Then after crossing the border into mainland China, I really appreciated what a nice easy environment Hong Kong really is! And it has the world's greatest cityscape (in my humble opinion) so it's definitely worth a visit

Much safer than here ! In Chinese big cities there are always so many people around and unlike here if there is trouble people help each other and even help the police chase criminals.

If you are not western looking , be careful of lusftul westerners on Hong Kong Island. They all seem to think we are prostitutes.

Hong Kong has very few handguns in criminal hands, and an efficient police force, but exercise the care you would when visiting any foriegn city. Take out the money you need when you leave the hotel, keep cameras and big watches out of sight, don't act conspicuosly and you should be fine.

HK is pretty safe actually...

I have been there about 4-5 times and have never felt unsafe ?

People aren't exactly the most polite and friendly though...

I think generally, we have to be cautious and mindful of our passports, wallets EVERYWHERE we go, that's all (everywhere = not HK specific but any country in general)

in case you have had adventure traveling on my own you will understand which you in basic terms would desire to be careful. traveling in Hong Kong is not extra risky than traveling in London. shop your wits approximately you and you would be fantastic. Taxis are low priced accessible in case you ever get misplaced or sense uncomfortable everywhere. would desire to-dos incorporate a great number of inexpensive procuring on the markets (with a great number of haggling) and traveling the great Buddha on Lantau Island.

I was there last November, in our one week stay there, it seems very safe, we were always out day and night, even in ungodly hours no body bothers us or something. Its a safe place, I think.
