Yes it is legal. As long as the job posting calls out a specific gender. It woud be different if the job posting just said secretary wanted, and then word got out that he was only looking for a female. Same thing with citizenship if you want an American citizen for the position you must state that in the posting.

I'm not sure he can put gender on the list of criteria and if a male wanted to apply than he would have to accept the application, but that wouldn't stop him from hiring a female.
Now I'm pretty sure if it is a business where the female is required due to the clientelle such as in a gynocologist office, it would be legal.

Yes I think it is. But be careful if you know anyone that was thinking of applying to it because he is a man and only wants a woman. But it is legal

It is very illegal to ask for a female only to apply. He must take all applications but if he is looking for a female to fill the position he has to keep that to himself. He maybe surprised that a guy could fill the position better but not likely if he is looking for something in women only. I wouldn't apply because he may have other things in mind too. The person may have to look a certain way, dress, act etc.

Its not, its called discrimination. The ad is legal, but if a male wnet to interview and was told he is only hiring women then he can file a discrimination suit.

Yes, but you might want to ask yourself why he wants only a woman secretary before applying.

No, it is not legal, but I'll bet he gets away with it. While it is politically correct for a woman to want a job that has traditionally been filled by males, I highly doubt a guy is going to sue him over this.

Depends on your state/city. Some have their own laws.
As for Federal law, some anti-discrimination laws apply only to those firms who are federal contractors or sub-contractors. Also, some federal labor laws exempt very small firms.
Law aside, he is very foolish to use discriminatory advertising.
