there are many easily fooled people out there who will happily blindlessly follow what these celebrities say "given that they just repeat what they see in the media" they are dumbing down society

No - i disagree. Every person is entitled to their opinion, and is entitlted to shout it from te rooftops. I may not necessarily agree, but will never stop anybody's right to voice their views.

HOWEVER....

The problem is when celebrities are paid by political parties to as you say celeb up politics as a vote winning exercise. Muchas I love Geri Halliwell, I was horrifed to see her serving tea in an old people's home while lying to us all about how great Labour's record on NHS and pensions was.
(Does anybody else remember that or is it one of my fantasies??)

PS - this is not anti-labour - I am sure that all teh others are at it too!

Perhaps that is true, I do wish people would take more time to find out the facts before making a well informed opinion on something, however, it is the nature and the right of a citizen of the USA (assuming that is where you are from) to be able to give his or her opinion, regardless of how much it lacks thought.

Most people have an opinion, and most people share that opinion. We just happen to hear about the celebrities that share theirs because they have a platform to share it. I really don't feel we can blame celebrities for dumbing us down, that is our own fault. I cannot blame anyone else but myself if I am "dumbing down" now can I? I should be responsible for learning the truth and not just listening to a celebrity, which you are blaming them for doing (listening to someone else to form their ideas). We are just as bad as they are if we do not try to find out the truth for ourselves.

I recall going along to a Labour party electioneering night because it was in the halls of residence refectory after my dinner, and because Robbie Coltrane was there to speak on behalf of the Labour party. I was not a Labour voter at that time (the Poll tax was just being introduced in Scotland), but I listened to what they all had to say.

It is hard enough to get people interested in politics, and to use celebrities to hook an audience is fair game. It does however forever taint your view of the celebrities who have nailed his/her colours to the mast.

Personally, I would only go along to an electioneering night if there was a panel of all parties represented. If I was a celebrity I would use that position to ask them some questions, rather than offer support to one side without anyone hearing the other side of the coin.

Society dumbs itself down by failing to eliminate the mockery of democracy in which we live.

I reckon anyone trying to stifle free speech in our society should be hung drawn and quartered. We need all sides of the argument to have a proper debate and democracy. Celebrities can use their elevated public profile to voice an opinion if they so choose.

After all, politicians are public servants who are put in positions of trust, to act in the best interests of the people they represent - not to be corrupt, self interested, or any other country's lap dog government (Yo Bliar!)

Where would we be if no one stood up for what they believed in and offered a reasonable voice of dissent?

An autocratic dictatorship.

Yes. Americans, especially young Americans, need to understand that movie stars' jobs are to pretend they are someone else in front of cameras all day. Actors act, singers sing. We all have political opinions and belong to one party or another. But when an actor or singer uses their celebrity to bark at us about certain politicians, it's wrong. We just need to take what they say with a grain of salt and do our own research about the issues.

I believe that if a celebrity is allowed to say that their belief is fact then any person in America should be allowed the same justice. If Tom Cruise can go on national t.v. and claim that Brooke Shields had no right to take medication for her post pardum depression and say that its a fact that the drugs aren't helpful then I should be allowed on national t.v. to say that my beliefs in God are right and real and no one else is right...I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion right or wrong...u should not be allowed to state something as a fact without knowing it is one first...and that takes a lot of research and time

No. No moreso than someone who blindly follows a particular Party or Religious belief system. If as a Voter you aren't going to actually THINK about who/what you are voting for and why, then perhaps you should just stay home and quit mucking up the system for those who DO actually consider the issues and candidates with reason and actual thought of who their vote will affect.

No, in the U.S. at least, they have the right of free speech just like anyone else. And we have the right to point and laugh when they make some asinine pronouncement.

It's too bad if people are dumb enough to let some actor or singer influence how they think on an issue, but you can't protect people from their own stupidity.

No. There is this thing have called freedom of speech and freedom of expression. They can say what ever they want. The people you should actually be concerned with are the ones who "let what the celebrities say formulate their opinions" and thus the outcomes of their own actions.
