There are so many great places to eat in San Antonio that it's difficult to choose just a few. Bring money, start at one end of the Riverwalk, and work your way (or, eat your way!) to the other end. It would be an experience!! (Landry's now has a Rainforest Cafe down there too, btw.)
Then of course, you'd have to get to Market Square and try Mi Tierra (yes, breakfast there is best) and La Margarita. But before you leave Mi Tierra, you must stop by their bakery cases... there are cookies, pastries, and mexican sweets galore!
Although I haven't eaten there, I hear Pico de Gallo is really good, and it's located "across" from Market Square, on the opposite side of I-10.
Landry's leased the Tower of the Americas and has made a lot of changes to it, and other changes are forthcoming. However, the new Landry's restaurant, Eyes Over Texas, is now open. It's a revolving restaurant at the top of the tower. If the food is as good as the view, it should be awesome!
Away from downtown there are also a lot of good restaurants and fast food places. Earl Abel's is a "tradition" in SA. Their original location was closed this year, but a new location was opened along Austin Hwy. Salsalito's is really good too, as is Tom's Ribs, and County Line BBQ.
Cha-Cho's has really good tacos. The chicken fajita tacos are good too. Bill Miller's is a really good "fast food" BBQ place.
There are many of the 'normal' chain restaurants as well, such as the Texas Roadhouse, Saltgrass Steak House, Texas Land & Cattle Co., Pappadeaux's, Pappasito's, Joe's Crab Shack, etc.
With so many varieties of restaurants, of virtually every kind of food, the trouble won't be in finding a great place to eat... it will be figuring out where to start!!

Uh, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but San Antonio is NOT the fattest city in the U.S. That dubious distinction is held by my town -- Motown (Detroit, Michigan). However, I was stationed in San Antonio for three years and had some of the BEST food anywhere on the planet. I still remember this convenience store in the southeast region that looked like a rough place (bars in the windows and all) but they had a bunch of Hispanic ladies in the back that made the most awesome tamales I've ever had. Wish I could remember the name of that place and find out if they would send me some in a FedEx cold pack...

As soon as I arrive in SA, I have to get me a Poorboy from Bill Millers and Tea. You never forgot the Poorboy.
For dinner, Margaritas is pretty good and after a late night of partying either Dona Marias or Mi Terria. Man...I gain 10-15 pounds.
If you dare hit the Flea Market on the Southside, then you have to get two five dollar Tripa Tacos and a cold Tecate while listening to some good old Mexican music. Classic!!!. You can't go wrong there. Too many choices in SA. I love it.

HELL YEAH!!! Bill Millers rocks!! po' boys, brisket, and THE BROWNIES.It's all good. Taco Cabana and Whataburger are equally good. I'm so happy to hear that someone else has heard of these places. Mom & Pop places, Annita's on the South Pan Am, Bud Jones on Military Dr., there's a place on Pleasington Rd. 2 blocks out from Military Dr. (it's BBQ), and my personal fave, Shilo's, down town. Near the mall. They have chicken N' dumplings ALMOST as good as Granny's. And homemade root beer and other German fares. The old folk know how to cook like nobody;s bussiness, find one.
