I would if I did that...but I try to actually pay attention to what people say, even when I'm half-awake, like today.

At least people slip into polite things they think they hear you say. Another version I've said many times is "morning" and people have automatically thought I've said "good morning". I have yet to meet a person who jumped to the idea that I insulted them when all I said was a short greeting.

Also, at least some version of "fine thanks" means the peson noticed you. Zero response back is much worse, then you either have to say "hello" again , or not know if you are even a part of the world they are in or they just don't like you.

No, i pay attention to what others say. I don't expect people to ask I am. But you should also say "Hello" back to the person, not that you are "Fine thanks & you". You sould say. "Hello, I'm fine thanks and yourself". But that is just what "Mrs. Mannors" taught me when I was in 5th grade.

No as long as they either hear me or respond. Its a gesture of friendship or kindness.

I sure do hate that. I also hate when someone says "Have a Happy Birthday" and like an idiot I reply "Thanks, you too"
