The word Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is defined as "a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust, mostly found in volcanos". It was originally postulated by Everett M. Smith, simply to serve as the longest English word, but has been used in several sources as an approximation of its originally intended definition. The plural of this word, pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconioses is equally long.

I don't know about the miners thing but the longest word i know is Antidisestablishmentarianism. My friend knows a longer one though, it was the microbe or whatever that started the black plague. I don't know what the word is though.

in english I think it is antiestablishmentaryanism (not sure about the spelling).
In other languages it differs:
french: anticonstitutionellement (same word
german: you can basically build infinite words (by stacking them together...makes scrabble quite interesting)

In what language?
The question reminds me of the riddle about "footsteps" being a palindrome...
