Every car I have owned has had a fuel gauge that unevenly measures fuel in the tank. From full to 3/4 tank is where about 1/2 the range is. From 1/4 to empty is more like 1/8 of the tank. New technology should be able to give a more accurate measure of the amount of fuel left in the tank.

The fuel gauge is not designed to be a exact instrument, it is a guide. Due to the designs of the fuel tanks (the shape needed to fit) and the fact the the gauge is a simple float unit, it is not going to be exact. Each car is slightly different, but on most of them "E" does not mean enough!!!

A more accurate gauge could be developed, but there is no great demand for one, and the cost would not be worth it!!

Believe it or not with all the electronic automotive technology, fuel gage sending units are still moving parts that wear and are designed only to be approximate. Do what I do. Fill the tank when the guage reads 1/2. That way I don't worry if the guage is accurate and it does not require me to take a second mortgage to keep my 26 gallon tank full.

As long as the gauge tells me when my car is gonna run out of gas and is accurate about that nothing else matters. How long it takes to get there means little to me if it is accurate before I run out of gas.

It's a vast conspiracy between the oil companies, car manufacturers and Republicans. Jesus will fix your fuel gauge.

Sorry just trying to answer for all the whackos first.

scientists are working on bigger problems, like reducing pollution..i say leave them be and let them work on that instead of improving the fuel gauge....
