He sits next to me. He talks at me all day long. Either very long involved stories that I'm just not interested in hearing or a succession of things like "read this", "what does that mean?", "what's this for?" "where's that?" It never stops. Now, he's a nice enough guy but I'm just sick to death of listening to him. How can I shut him up without being rude? I've tried all the regular approaches, but he seems unable to get the hint.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: he even talks when I'm on the phone!

He is obviously a very insecure guy and feels the need to be accepted all the time.
I would recommend you pull him aside and just be straight with him, he is a distraction and that's one thing nobody needs when your busy and trying to get your job done.

Be honest but sincere and let him know that you can't answer or talk to him all the time when he needs to know something or is just babbling about nothing. Tell him you haven't got time for useless conversation about nothing. It is a work place and not a social outing or club your in, your a professional , deal with it like one!

Play the guilty card. Tell him that the boss has had a quiet word with you and that he accused you of not doing your job as you are yapping all day. Tell him the boss really frightened you and you just want to keep a low profile for now. Make sure you hint to him that you never said to the boss that he talks more than you do and that the boss noticed only you talking. Make him feel that because of his constant gobbing you got into trouble with the boss. He will then be desperate to put things right and will leave you alone as he doesn't want you to loose your job.

with courtesy tell her that you've very a lot of work to get carried out which calls for your comprehensive concentration. Request some quiet time, and per chance no matter if that is that significant she will be able to inform you on a spoil or at a later date. proceed to apply that excuse till she get the point. If want be bypass to administration and candidly talk the distraction created through her always interrupting your artwork.

I read on the net the other day that boring people are actually bad for your health! They reckon listening to mind numbingly boring conversation, causes the same distress as having to put with over dramatic b@stards who cause mental fatigue.

Transfer your work station now, before you end up having a nervous breakdown, stapling his lips shut and ramming the coffee filter machine up his asss!!

You need to just flat out tell him that you can't talk all day, you have things to get done. He is being rude by doing this so just do it right back and be rude! If that doesn't work then go to a supervisor, thats what they are there for.

Pull him aside quietly and try to reason with him.
If after this, there is NO marked improvement, then take the matter to your manager.
I know all about this...'cause I work with a woman who talks (cloyingly) all day long!
Sometimes I want to hit her in the mouth with a shovel...BUT...I'm afraid it would bring on more unwanted conversation!
We all welcome the days when she's out of the office for vacation!
BUT...back to your situation...you might have to be rude to bring an end to the problem!
Don't close yourself off from this option!

I used a squirt gun to keep people like him away. And, ask management to establish some clearer guidelines about quality of work time issues, such as, initiating a system in which workers wear Velcro-arm bands when they are NOT to be talked to or disturbed as they work among others. That works.

Borrow a tape recorder and tape a couple of hours of conversation, then next day when he starts just play the tape back -- LOUD. Best of luck
