if you are using a windows app.- then you left click on start, then goto run and left click. in the box type msconfig--left click ok. left click on startup tab. then clear the programs you don't want to start up when you power up your computer. be careful not to clear the box on programs that are needed for startup, please consult someone who is very familiar with this procedure or you may not be able to restart your computer.

You can also do a

Start
Run
type in "msconfig" (only in winxp, If you're on 2K, you can copy this program from an xp box and install it in the system32 directory and it should work fine)

This will bring up the msconfig utility. It even shows the background processes that you have control of. It's a good place to look for spyware and shutdown stuff line realaudio and quicktime as well. After you make your changes, you'll have to reboot. After the reboot, msconfig will start up automatically. Just check the box that says "Don't start msconfig automatically...blahblahblah..." and you'll be good to go.

Type msconfig in your Start>Run dialog box. Then just uncheck anything on the list you think you don't need. Then restart.
