Microwaves dont send even amounts of heat throughout the cooking area. This is why you usually have to stir or mix your food halfway through cooking. The same thing happens with food-- some parts are really hot, and others cold if not mixed. This is also why cockroaches can survive microwaves. They move around looking for the cold spots.

A microwave 'excites' molecules and causes 'heat'..With a liquid, just like in air, heat rises.....Leaving the bottom maybe a little cooler than the top, (unless you end up with almost a boil, then you would not notice it.) Also, if you do not have a rotating dish in your microwave, the heating is not always even, due to the 'standing waves' in the microwave, which is basically a tuned radio cavity.. Anything placed in it disturbs the radio frequency 'tuning' and causes heat..

Anything heated in the microwave is heated from its most inner point outwards....cooked from the inside out. so the milk on the bottom or even the top can be cold and the middle piping hot!
