do whats in your job description pretend you are listening to everything he/she is saying when you are really thinking about what you are gonna wear this weekend, and compliment them on their look at least times a week.

Do your job to the best of your ability, always going one step further than they ask you to.
Wow them with what you come up with for solutions.
Don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution. How can you possibly ask for his / her respect, if you are whinning about how mean your boss is all the time.
Show your boss respect, let them know that you value your job and you are going beyond what is required of the position.
Don't get up and leave at 5.00 --- stay a little later, even if it means staying till after the boss leaves. Don't leave tasks incompleted.
Hit your deadlines. or die trying.
My boss knows that I will do everything I can to make her look good. I will always go beyond the call of duty to complete an assignment and I will always let her know if her expectations are too far out there.
I openly communicate exactly what can be done and what cannot, but I never tell her that she is wrong.
Just do your best, and if it doesn't work, then start looking somewhere else for a job.
Good luck

It's not your job to make your boss "happy" - more than likely his spouse/children already have to live with his moodiness and sullen attitude.
It IS your job to make your boss look good, exceed company standards and to do what is asked of you. But making him happy isn't in your job description. And you're not alone -everyone in his life already knows how bad he is.
Forget the whole "happy" dwarf thing. Dress professionally, arrive on time, work diligently without constant socializing, be organized and goal oriented. Take care of yourself and expect nothing from your boss...
Good luck...

You have two options to make your boss happy - The first is to be a yes man / woman. Do everything they say, just like a robot. Or you can take tasks over for your boss, and give him all the credit for the finished projects.
OR, you can be like me. Quit your job which made my boss real happy.
It's a dog-eat-dog world out there, and we're all wearing milkbone underwear.............

Do your job to the best of your ability ie.complete your work on time or before, quickly and efficiently, take on more than you are asked to do, get along with the other employees, clients and/or customers. Be early to work, last to leave, and first to volunteer. And most importantly...do it all with your own sense of style, and with a smile!!! Good luck!!!
