Although this is 2006, certain states are still more sensitive than others when it comes to ethnicity. Is the African American community accepted in Colorado Springs? I'm sure they are the minority there, but are any African Americans here on the board currently living in Colorado? I am looking for an area that has a mixture of ethnic groups, or at least are accepting of other ethnicities. Thanks

NOTE: I don't mind living in a predominantly white area. I currently live in a chicago northwest burb that is 90% white and 10% other. I just don't want to live in an area that is known for treating other ethnicities unfairly, or has extreme prejudice. Prejudice is everywhere, you can't avoid it, but we all know some areas are worse than others. I'd like to know if colorado springs is one. Thanks

Ignore the posts that stated that you have to clean for rich white people out here to get ahead and that you have to look white to live out here , because it is not true. I am african-american and I live in Colorado Springs, born and raised here (but have lived all over the country too). I have been out here for a good amount of time, and have only had a few bad racial expereinces living out here compared to other states and places that i have lived . There is a small african-american community in Colorado Springs, mainly on the south east part of town. There are many african-americans scatterd all through out colorado springs, especially in my area of town. north (briagate area). The area that I live is mostly whites, but over the past 3 years we have had a few other cultures move in this area too, colorado springs still has a long way to go to become really culturally diversed, but they are pretty tolereant of different races, you still however are going to have iggnorant people out here, but you will find that no matter what state you move too. The only thing that will be hard for you getting used to is the slower pace out here. And it will take awhile to get used to the culinary offeings and the shopping (the mall to go to out here is the Citadel Mall) out here. Colorado is two steps beind New York and step behind LA when it comes to fashion. The club scene and party scene is sorry (there are only two descent places to go for clubs), if you want to party go to Denver, but other than colorado springs is a nice area to live, especially if you enjoy the out doors and want a slower pace in life. Hopes this helps in your decision.

Colorado in general does not have a large African American community. Denver is the exception. The rest of the state is completely different. The 'major minority' in Colorado is the Hispanic community. Also, there is not a large Asian community as well.

Colorado Springs, being a larger community, has somewhat of a larger African American ratio. As far as an area that accepts other ethnicities, Colorado as a whole is a great place to start looking. Springs is a military town. There are not a lot of natives of Colorado Springs. There is very much a wide range of races there.

Colorado, particularly Pueblo (where I'm at) and even Denver, is VERY much into celebrating their heritage. Pueblo is extremely cultural and everyone participates in everyone's festivals. Springs is a bit more urban. Denver, for as large as it is, celebrates with some mighty festivals many times a year. (If you do move here, don't miss the Greek festival in Denver. It's a lot of fun!)

Hope this helps you somewhat!

I believe all things considered, CS is far better than the South, East and Mid-west. You will be respected and accepted.

I will tell you the biggest change for you will be cultural. I have heard this from a number of parents of my students I have had as well as my friends.

Again, overall, I really believe you will love the area.

No wonder you feel discriminated against! Chicago is one of the worst! Get out while you still can! Colorado is fine. Its about 60% white, 25% hispanic/latin origin, 15% black

If you can "pass" for white, then you'll be alright. If you're going to be a "maid" for rich whites, that would be OK. Otherwise, you had better be "Oprah" rich or you will stick out like _____ Well, I think this will give you a picture. Colorado Springs is Hoity Toity white.
