I'm sure they were mechanical (due to the sound) but others say they were a tape/p.a system.

I used to own one. There are a couple of options. One is a PA system connected to a tape deck using pre-recorded or home made tapes. The other provides many more choices in the selection of music and or sound effects. That one is the electronic system. Depending on your budget you could and still can get a system that will play up to 100 different tunes & melodies. JCWHITNEY.COM has several available.

Judging by the sound emmanating from our local ice-cream van, I'd say using Stone Age technology more akin to Fred Flintstone's era. The tune seems to be a hybrid-mix of Greensleeves and Itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny-yellow-poker-dot-bikini. I try to hum along with it but the tune keeps changing!

They were indeed a wind up system just like a music box,
