In today's world, the word Addiction is thrown around lazily. Now you can be addicted to eating, shopping, sex, even sleep. But the term addiction is used as if the object of the addiction is at fault and not the person. Dependency puts the emphasis back where it should be, on the person. A person thinks it's cute when you say "I'm addicted to shopping." But it sounds like a real problem when you say, "I'm dependent on shopping." Problem is back on the person, so what do you all think on the subject?

I think I am a recovering addict and am therefore no longer dependent on drugs.

I do see your point though, I am sick of the way the word addiction is thrown around. You can be addicted to all the things that you mentioned, however there is nothing pretty or funny about it.

If you use the 12 step definition of addiction, then it makes this more clear. You are addicted if you cannot control X and it has made your life unmanageable. Therefore, if someone continues in a behavior that is clearly destroying any part of their life, that is an addiction. You can be dependent without being addicted. You cannot, however, be addicted without being dependent.

Admitting you are an addict, does NOT in anyway take away personal responsibility for one's behavior.

I am addicted to overeating, but I am dependant on food. I see a clear distinction between the meanings of the two words.

The reason people get "addicted" to things is because they're trying to run away from the problem. Everyone is dependant on something, my kids are dependant on me to care for them, my boss is dependent on me to get the job done right.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Now, anything else is brain washing, shopping is a form of brainwashing, sales, advertising. and so is the mental health feild trying to sell thier self help, etc. It's not true, and don't work.
Only one way to work it out through Jesus and God's grace.
